Washer and Dryer Sets
Washer and dryer sets are a combination of both the washing machine and the clothes dryer. This is an ideal solution if you are living in a small city apartment as it requires less space of the device.
When buying one of the washer and dryer sets, you have few options. You can buy them separated as the washing machine and the dryer. You can buy them as stackable pair, reducing the space required, or you can buy a combo washer dryer which has both the functions in one device.
Price Range
A washer and dryer set can cost you from $450 (stackable) to $1000+(combo). Even though combo device takes less space, it may not be efficient and effective as a stackable set. However, most consumers will prefer the convenience of having one device in house rather than two.
Washer & Dryer Buying Tips
- Capacity - Make sure the check the capacity of the units. If you're a small family or living single, you don't need a high capacity unit. It will only result in higher electric and water bills.
- Energy Efficiency - Try to get appliances with high energy efficiency ratings. Even though they may be a little more expensive, you will be saving money on the long term on reduced electric, gas and water bills.
- Overall features - Compare the features of the units. Some high tech combo units will have one touch washing and drying, while low-priced units may be semi-automatic. If you're living a busy lifestyle, it may be a good choice to go for a fully automatic combo.
- Shipping and handling - Since these are heavy appliances, you will need to arrange delivery and handling unless you live in a house with many people. Especially if you're ordering online and living in a high rise apartment, you may need to pay extra to get it delivered to your place.
- Warranty - This may not be a concern for most of you, because many manufacturers provide at least a one year warranty on manufacturer's defects. However, if you're planning to relocate overseas anytime soon, you may need to think about international warranties and service centers - because only major brands such as LG, Samsung, Electrolux and Haier offer this.
Important notes
A common issue when buying a dryer is the requirement for venting. Most devices do not operate at the optimal efficiency if it is not given the required ventilation to exhaust air. However most newer devices are more efficient because the manufactures have noticed the issue and have made efforts to minimize the negative effects.
If you are not really concerned about the space saving of a washer dryer combo, you will be better off buying a stackable or separated washer and dryer set. Of course, it will require more space, and air ventilation has to be arranged, but it will save you energy, time and it will be good for long-life of your clothes.
